How to Read the Live Severe-Weather Data

Warnings describe an immediate hazard and may require protective action. SPC storm reports document preliminary observations that have already occurred. A report near you does not replace an official warning, and a warning may be issued before any report appears.

  • Treat Tornado Warnings as urgent and shelter according to local NWS instructions.
  • Check the warning issue and expiration times; conditions can change quickly.
  • Use report markers as preliminary observations, not as confirmed damage ratings.

Tornado Safety Questions and Answers

What should I do during a Tornado Warning?

Go immediately to a basement, storm shelter, or small interior room on the lowest floor. Stay away from windows and protect your head and neck. Follow local NWS and emergency-management instructions.

What is the difference between a watch and a warning?

A watch means conditions are favorable and you should be ready. A warning means a tornado or severe thunderstorm is occurring or imminent in the warned area and you should act now.

Are SPC tornado and hail reports confirmed?

No. SPC reports are preliminary observations. Local NWS offices may later correct a location, change the event type, or publish a formal storm survey and tornado rating.

How often does this tracker refresh?

The site checks live sources every five minutes. Each panel displays its last successful source check and hides data that is more than 30 minutes stale.

Storm-Chaser Live Video

Video streams are placed below the official warning and report information. They load only after you select a stream and should never replace official local instructions.
