About FindTheTornado
FindTheTornado.com is a free educational resource about tornado and hail risk for U.S. homeowners, vehicle owners, and property owners. Our mission is to make official storm data — published by the federal government but often difficult to access and interpret — easy to understand.
What We Do
We collect live storm data from:
- The NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) — daily preliminary tornado and hail reports, updated throughout each convective day (12:00 UTC to 12:00 UTC).
- The National Weather Service (NWS) — active tornado warnings, tornado watches, and severe thunderstorm warnings via the official `api.weather.gov` REST API.
We present this data in a clear, readable format. We also provide educational guides on topics like understanding the EF scale, what hail sizes mean for property damage, how to document storm damage, and how to inspect your property safely after a severe weather event.
What We Are Not
FindTheTornado.com is not a contractor, inspection service, or insurance company. We do not:
- Perform property inspections or damage assessments.
- Arrange or recommend repairs.
- Assist with insurance claims or assignment of benefits.
- Generate leads for contractors or insurance adjusters.
If you have experienced storm damage, you should contact a licensed contractor for an inspection and your insurance company to file a claim.
Our Data Standards
All storm data displayed on this site comes directly from official U.S. government sources (SPC and NWS). We do not manufacture, interpolate, or modify the underlying reports. SPC storm reports are preliminary at publication and may be updated or revised by local NWS offices.
See our Data Sources page and Editorial Standards for full details.
